The Emerald Way

The Emerald Way by 2002

...sometimes, the world can use a little sweetness and light to ward off the dark and dreary. If you feel as I do, than The Emerald Way will transport you, at least for awhile, to a land of calm and beauty.” —New Age Reporter

Inspired by a tale from Sri Aurobindo, this album is about choosing to follow the path of the heart. Soulful flutes, silky guitar and piano tell the story, accompanied by lush strings, harp and chimes blending into 2002's signature sound, renowned for comfort and deep relaxation.

"The Emerald Way" was my introduction to the music of 2002. I must be honest and say that, prior to having this album recommended to me, I was not aware of 2002's existence. Since listening to this album (playing it numerous times!), I have since downloaded all of their albums and I just can't stop playing them! I just can't wait for the release of "Believe". Spanning a career that dates back to 1992, Pamela and Randy Copus, aka 2002, need little introduction to the genre’s fans. Much like another icon, Enya, 2002 have their fans who appreciate the care, quality, and attention to detail which each successive CD displays. Melding acoustic instruments (piano, flute, guitar) with lush layers of vocals and keyboards, the pair have found their “formula” and through the years have continued to fine-tune it, tweaking here and there just enough to make recordings distinguishable from one another The Emerald Way is a warm soothing “embrace” of music which asks little of the listener yet rewards the non-cynic with many moments of beauty and grace. Provided that flowing romantic melodies, multi-tracked choral vocals, and a quasi-Spectorish “wall of sound” production are your cup of chamomile, you”ll enjoy this CD. Understand that The Emerald Way makes no apologies for its unabashed positivity or its heart-on-the-sleeve evocations of the “good” side of humanity. “Inner Light”, the album opener, showcases the artists‘ adroit way of layering piano with synth strings, gradually folding in soft flute, twinkling synths, acoustic guitar and multi-tracked chorals. Look up the word “angelic”; in a new age dictionary and you’d probably see a reference to this song.

Unlike their most obvious compatriot, Enya, 2002’s music is subtly diverse. “Another Answer Came” has a more dramatic sense of “oomph” with nods to neo-orchestral music. The title track carries a hint of both Ireland (lovely lilting whistle) crossed with Asia (owing to the presence of lightly struck bells) and this juxtaposition results in a lovely song which gradually evolves into a track which could have come from the soundtrack to Local Hero (Mark Knopfler’s superb music), thanks to some semi-lively acoustic guitar. “Timeless” at only 3:21, while sounding awfully close to typical Enya, wins the listener over with its unforced pace and perfect mixture of synths, piano, and vocals.

Critics of new age music often overlook the obvious sincerity of the artists who, through the years, have released many high quality recordings. Pamela and Randy Copus should have nothing left to prove. It’s clear they mean what they “say”. Ya know, sometimes, the world can use a little sweetness and light to ward off the dark and dreary. If you feel as I do, than The Emerald Way will transport you, at least for awhile, to a land of calm and beauty.

Who can forget one of Hollywood’s most memorable movies, “The Wizard of” and its bedazzling world of fantasy and adventure? As the characters weave their way along the colorful yellow brick wall to Emerald City they face many challenges along the way. Yet, as a group, Dorothy and company supported each other throughout their journey. The same can be said for The Emerald Way and its soft, serene and silky arrangements that will keep you secure through your everyday difficulties.

As always, 2002 deliver the goods. The parallels to Enya have always been present, largely due to the ethereal multi layering of both the musical and vocal approach that this duo brings to their creations. But considering 2002’s utterly consistent high quality output and Enya’s rather disappointing release this year, it would appear that the First Lady of New Age may want to secure some tips from 2002 who continue to impress. The last few projects have seen some lead vocal experimenting however with the exception of the opening and closing bars of “Remember Now” the duo let their instruments do all the talking. As always, the unique concoction of flute, harp, acoustic guitar and coats of swirling keyboards are ever present. In fact, the title track is a great place to enjoy their unique merging of several instruments. The song begins with an extended spacious ambient theme that then launches into the soft acoustic strumming of Randy’s memorable nylon guitar strings. The themes are repeated via the more upbeat and bouncy closer “Secret Shores”. This time Pamela’s flute plays wistfully alongside the guitars and the gentle rhythms of the contemplative keyboards. This particular composition presents the listener with ultimate ingredients that makes 2002 ever so enjoyable. The even more spatial ambient themes can be accessed via the moody and pensive “Soul Door”. The flute is showcased yet never at the expense of being condescending. Once again it is the intent of this duo to bring peace and tranquility to the listener. Showboating is just not their style. The same can be said for the stripped down “Timeless” that prominently features the piano.

2002 joined the Real Music label over ten years ago and have never failed to deliver top quality material. So much so that they could offer a guarantee or your money refunded if not satisfied and still remain profitable. From that aspect, The Emerald Way continues on that fine assurance. Considering their track record it would be no surprise that a decade from now 2002 would continue to be not only the flagship artist of Real Music but also the outright leading artist of the New Age Music industry.
