From the first few notes in the air, like those barely visible trails of refined incense smoke held aloft by some unseen hand, I am hooked. Like gently gravity, Jethro Williams’ flute amidst a wash of Prem Williams’ keyboard tapestries pulls my attention back into my body, all the way down to my toes. My ribcage expands spontaneously. Breathing Space is an apt title.

These two practitioner-musicians have been cultivating an inner life while honing their craft as the core members of Sacred Earth. The Williams duo are joined by Caiseal Mor on the esraj (a Bengali stringed instrument often referred to as the Indian harp) and Michael Arvanitakis filling out tracks on cello and sitar. Breathing Space is a gift to anyone’s playlist for going forward.

This set is different from the rest of the batch by Sacred Earth. This sounds like the soundtrack of a vision quest. A personal album long gestating in the mind of the male half of the duo, it’s dedicated to the couple’s child. This child will soon be reaching his terrible twos and if a set like this was gestating along with the kid, one can only hope poppa didn’t feel the need to make this because the tyke is a real hell raiser. Squarely in the classic new age bag, this album is more about making the most of white space than it is filling in all the blanks. Real stuff for the real seeker.
