Further confirmation that music can help ease a patient's pain was covered today on NPR's Morning Edition, To Ease Pain, Reach For Your Playlist Instead Of Popping A Pill. The story covered a new study by Sunitha and Santhanam Suresh (a daughter and father team) who studied the effect music and audio books had in easing the pain for post-operative children. They found that either audio therapy reduced pain by 1 point on a 10 point scale, or the equivelant of taking a dose of over the counter pain medication like Tylenol. This type of reduction could result in the lower use of pain medication for children, which is great news as children are more likely to suffer from side effects from these medications.
