Filled with Light

Filled with Light by Bernward Koch
With the release of his 9th album for Real Music, Bernward Koch is in fine form as he once again delivers an emotional album filled with vignettes that captures the elusive glow of a sunset or how the light plays through the leaves of a tree that sways and bends in a light breeze on a warm summer afternoon. The music that Koch offers to his fans on this melodic journey is in essence a sonic painting of the warm and comforting rays of light that we often take for granted as we rush about our daily business. The album was produced, arranged and performed by Koch so it is apparent from the word go that his hand was on each song and melody shaping and molding them to perfection as each one captured the heart and spirit of light for which this album was so aptly named.

With so many albums behind him you might think that he would not be as enthusiastic about his compositions as he was so many years ago when he first set out on this musical path. But you would be wrong in that assumption because Koch still pours his heart and soul into his music and it shows through each and every song included on this new project. For the most part Filled with Light is a serene journey that allows the listener to simply relax into the luxurious piano work that Koch crafts so well.

There are twelve beautiful compositions here, nearly an hour of listening time allowing ample opportunity for the listener to permit the calming and reflective songs to work their magic on a tired psyche in need of a few minutes to wind down from days which always seem to be just a little too hectic. Koch’s skillful playing not only gives undeniable evidence of his abilities as a top notch composer, but also reflects very highly on his ability to bring his compositions to life through his expert abilities as a pianist.

Filled with Light is both uplifting and delicate, opening up a musical dialogue between us and nature. The tracks flows from one to the next with the single minded goal of offering the listener a chance to find the light that shines from nature, the light that we are often too busy to see. Koch’s music brings the listener to a more restful state of mind which is necessary if we are ever to see that which always surrounds us. The album concludes with a beautiful song called “Underwater Sunbeams” and you can just feel the water slowing your movements and the light diffused coming down to you below the surface of the water. It is a thoughtful song that reminds us that there are as many qualities to light in nature as there are songs, melodies, and compositions to express them. Filled with Light is a polished gem of a release and will definitely be a welcome addition to your new age music collection.
