Hypnosis

Hypnosis by Thierry David

Hypnosis is Thierry David’s 5th album for the Real Music label and in my opinion is probably his best so far, and considering the quality of the other releases he has available on the Real Music label, that is saying a lot. Thierry is a French electronic and ambient music composer who has consistently fashioned some of the finest sounds coming from the European continent.  Having been a long time listener of Real Music releases, I must admit that this release took me by surprise in that it moves beyond what I was expecting music on this label to sound like.  Many labels develop an identity over time, and in the minds of listeners when a new release shows up you think that you have some idea as to what it is going to sound like based on the track record of the label. Hypnosis by Thierry David just goes to show that you should never make assumptions like that because as soon as you do a release like this comes along and proves you wrong.

Hypnosis is an album filled with lush, smooth grooves that wash over you in rhythmic waves of sound that immediately sets the mind at ease and puts the listener on a course for a meditative journey into the heart of tranquility. This album has been playing repeatedly on my system and it never seems to get old. From the first song to the last, this is one well-crafted release that sounds just as fresh on the 10th listen as it did on the first. There have only been a handful of albums that I feel comfortable saying that about, but Hypnosis easily joins that exclusive club of releases as it delivers great vibes each and every time.

Thierry David’s compositions seem to stay towards the edges of consciousness as they move slowly across the listener’s mind in a shadowy space that is almost as much felt as it is heard.  The title of this release, Hypnosis, is very descriptive of what the listener will find on the eleven tracks that are contained on this album, as the rhythmic pulses and beats create an atmosphere that lulls you into an alternate state of mind. With song titles like “Mesmerizing Spirals,” “Exploring Boundaries,” “Labyrinth of the Unconscious,” and “Into the Shimmering Mantra,” you immediately understand where this journey is going to take you.

One of my favorite songs on this album is one called “Code Magnetique.” This is a wonderfully tribal piece that features some great percussion that is very reminiscent of Byron Metcalf’s excellent drumming on many of his releases. The percussion on this album is credited to Steve Shehan in the liner notes and I must say that the subtle and trance like beats that are found on this track are well worth putting this track on repeat and listening to it continuously several times through. Another favorite song that echoes in my mind long after I quit playing it is the aforementioned “Labyrinth of the Unconscious.” The melody is a simple one and loops in and around itself in a very haunting way so as to paint a soundscape in delicate shades of blue and purple, …soothing and dreamy.

Thierry David has shown with the release of Hypnosis that he is a talented musician and composer capable of creating music that while still being subtle is filled with emotional energy that flows out of his spirit and connects with each listener who journeys along with him. The album closes with a memorable tune called “Nothing to Forgive” which even though it clocks in at a little over two minutes, packs an emotional punch as a closing song to the other ten melodies that inexorably brought you to this conclusion.

Thierry David has impressed me with this release which exhibits the passion and maturity of his compositional skills and his ability to create a unified album that flows so well from beginning to end. Thierry’s artistry resides in each and every song as he weaves a musical tapestry that allows the listener to get lost in the flow, whether they are seeking to shrug off the day that has been a rough go of it, or whether they are simply using the music to focus their minds for meditative purposes. Thierry has shown here that he is a world class musician and is more than able to reveal his heart through his compositions. The recording and sound quality throughout is impeccable and further evidence that Thierry’s musical sensibilities are of the highest caliber. Highly recommended by Ambient Visions.
