Stillness: A Collection

The great thing about listening to a collection of songs from Real Music's artists is that you know as a label they have a lot of great musicians and that the vision of most of those artists blend together into a unified whole that allows a collection like Stillness to feel as if the artists deliberately set out to create this album. Real Music founder Terence Yallop also deserves credit for this collection as his discernment for which songs will truly reflect the theme of the overall album shows through in his choices of music to include in this collection. Oftentimes this fact can be overlooked by those who have not spent hours and hours listening to a variety of artists seeking the common threads that run through songs and how they overlap.

Starting with the opening track by Rajendra Teredesai entitled “Essence of Life” the listener knows that they have started a journey into those areas of the heart and mind that can only be reached via the solitude and quiet that comes through simply being quiet and hearing those things that we normally overlook when our hectic day to day life presses in around us.  His soothing flute is a call to the spirit setting the stage for entering into a space that is at once sacred and down to earth. The chimes and the bells that open the 2nd track “Calling Wisdom” by Karunesh cement what was started on the first track and open the door to the listener's inner temple which allows you to cast off the ordinary and step into a meditative state.

Once in this meditative state Kenio Fuke provides you with your next step on track 3 called “Enchanted Forest” which soothes the listener with some very soft bird songs and peaceful keyboard/horn music which surrounds you with the feeling of walking into the woods in the early morning and hearing only the sounds of birds in the trees that surrounds you. You get the idea that this collection was put together to facilitate exactly the journey that the listener needs to take as they immerse themselves in this collection of songs. That is what makes these collections so wonderful because not only are they put together to illustrate a particular theme, they are also flexible enough to allow each person who hears it to take the specific journey that is important to them as they listen to the songs.

With artists such as Frank Steiner Jr., Hilary Stagg, Peter Kater, and Liquid Mind providing the tracks that follow in this collection, you begin to understand how it can be a difficult task choosing and arranging songs to form a cohesive collection like this. Terence Yallop obviously has a feel for the artists who record for Real Music and he also has a feel for how music in general can be blended to create a particular mood or emotion in the listener. Stillness is another fine collection from Real Music and would make a fine addition to anyone’s music collection. Recommended.
