Enya and Loreena McKennitt fans — be alert!...Or Mabinogi is full of enchanting vocals, infectious rhythms and sparkling instrumental work. Many of the songs are uptempo with a myriad of percussion and rhythms — some may even entice you to get up and dance...This is a release brimming over with originality and musical daring.
It is the middle of summer and it is hot and humid and the thought of a refreshing dip in the pool sounds so appealing. As I float face down in the pool it is a wonderful feeling of freedom and weightlessness. Then the sun's rays bounce and dance off the disturbance of the water surface and reflect off the pool floor making you feel alive and still relaxed at the very same time. What an oxymoron. Yet these emotions of relaxation and stimulation parallels the philosophical and exuberant state that The Light Dance creates.
The Real Music label is known for releasing easygoing and relaxing music that can often be loosely classed as new age. The Light Dance is an archetypal new age album in the sense that it has been created for meditation, specifically, physical meditations using an IDOGO pole, and t'ai chi. Though Buedi Siebert is a classically trained flutist, he's also accomplished, judging by this album, on a Chinese like zither called a Guzheng.
New Age fans are sure to be acquainted with Gandalf“s output; this is my first introduction to his music though. When reviewing an artist I’ve never heard before, I feel at a disadvantage due to having little prior sense of where the artist is coming from musically, yet on the other side of the coin it’s refreshing to approach an album with little or no idea of what to expect. In this case, the opening track captivated me straight away, to the point that this album has had more than it’s fair share of time in my CD player recently.
Dramatic yet dreamy, Gandalf’s latest creation lingers between the world of accessible commercialism and meditative benefits. As a result, Between Earth And Sky could not be more appropriately titled, residing between the tangible and the intangible, compelling it to become a regular visitor on my CD player.
